Bitcoin v0.1 released

Two months after describing Bitcoin in a white paper, Satoshi Nakamoto announced the first release of the software on the Cryptography mailing list, where the paper had first appeared. The message, titled “Bitcoin v0.1 released”, is dated 8 January 2009 at 14:27:40 EST in the archive of the list. It presented “a new electronic cash system that uses a peer-to-peer network to prevent double-spending”, with no server and no central authority.
The release ran on Windows only and came with its C++ source code. Satoshi asked those who tried it to keep a node running and to accept incoming connections on port 8333, warned that the software was still alpha and experimental, and set out the rules of issuance: 21 million coins in all, handed out to the nodes that make blocks, the amount cut in half every four years. When that ran out, he wrote, transaction fees could take over.
Another copy of the message carries the date of 10 January, when the list relayed it to its subscribers. The archive keeps the earlier time, which is the one used here.
Block 1 was mined on 9 January 2009 at 02:54 UTC, about seven and a half hours after the announcement and six days after the genesis block of 3 January. Every block since has been built on it. Its hash, like every hash, can be checked on any node.
