On the evening of 27 July 2012, 80,000 spectators filled the new Olympic Stadium in east London, built on former industrial land, for the opening ceremony of the Games of the XXX Olympiad. The film director Danny Boyle had conceived the show under the title “Isles of Wonder”, and it opened on a pastoral Britain: grass, a cottage, a windmill, and live sheep, geese and cows on the stadium floor.
Children counted down the last seconds by bursting giant balloons, and at 21:00 exactly Bradley Wiggins, who had just won the Tour de France, rang a huge bell made for the occasion. The show that followed lasted about three and a half hours, with a tribute to the National Health Service, an appearance by James Bond, David Beckham and, near the end, Paul McCartney. Around 80 heads of state watched from the stands, while millions of Britons followed it in pubs, at home and in front of big screens in the parks.
