Usain Bolt runs 100 metres in 9.58
The moment this block marks: the starting gun of the final in Berlin, 21:45 local time, 16 August 2009, 19:45:00 UTC. The first block mined after it is block 21,359, 17 August 2009, 00:20:42 UTC.
On the evening of 16 August 2009, at the World Championships in Athletics in Berlin, the eight finalists of the men's 100 metres settled into their blocks in the Olympiastadion. At 21:45 the gun went off. A year earlier, at the Olympic Games in Beijing, Usain Bolt had set the world record at 9.69 seconds, easing up before the line.
In Berlin he ran through to the end. He crossed the line in 9.58 seconds, taking more than a tenth of a second off his own record, the largest improvement of the 100 metres record since times were measured electronically. Tyson Gay finished second in 9.71, a time no one but Bolt had ever beaten.
Bitcoin was then seven months old, and its blocks were few and far between: the first one mined after the gun, block 21,359, came four and a half hours later, after midnight UTC, while Berlin was still celebrating. Its hash, like every hash, can be checked on any node.
