Germany and Argentina met in the final of the 2014 World Cup at the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro on 13 July. It was a tight match, and a strange one for Christoph Kramer, a young German midfielder. In the first half he collided heavily with Ezequiel Garay. He played on, dazed, long enough to ask the referee whether this was really the final, before he was taken off; he later said he remembered nothing between the 17th minute and half-time.
The match was still goalless when Joachim Löw sent on Mario Götze, 22, in the 88th minute, in place of Miroslav Klose, and told him to show the world he was better than Messi. In the 113th minute André Schürrle crossed from the left, Götze took the ball on his chest and volleyed it past Sergio Romero with his left foot. Germany won their fourth title, the first by a European team in South America. Lionel Messi received the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament.
