The Rio 2016 Olympic Games open
The moment this block marks: the start of the opening ceremony, 20:00 in Rio, 5 August 2016, 23:00:00 UTC. The first block mined after it is block 423,874, 5 August 2016, 23:17:32 UTC.
On the evening of 5 August 2016, the Maracanã stadium in Rio de Janeiro held the opening ceremony of the first Olympic Games in South America. The show, directed by Fernando Meirelles, Daniela Thomas and Andrucha Waddington, began at 20:00 with fireworks over the stadium, and Paulinho da Viola sang the national anthem as the flag of Brazil was raised.
A series of tableaux then told the history of the country: the Amazon forest and its first inhabitants, the European caravels crossing the Atlantic, the slaves brought from Africa to the sugar plantations, the growth of the cities, and Alberto Santos-Dumont flying his 14-bis above the stadium. Gisele Bündchen crossed the floor to “The Girl from Ipanema”. The show closed its first part on global warming, and each athlete received a seed, to be planted after the Games. It was all staged on a budget about a tenth of London's four years earlier.
The parade of athletes began at 20:52, led by Greece, and the Refugee Olympic Team entered behind the Olympic flag to loud applause. At 23:27 Michel Temer, Brazil's acting president, declared the Games open, and the marathon runner Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima lit the cauldron.
Block 423,874 was mined seventeen minutes after the start, at 20:17 in Rio, while the first part of the show, on Brazil and its history, was under way and more than half an hour before the first athletes walked in. Its hash, like every hash, can be checked on any node.
