Twenty years after France beat Croatia in a World Cup semi-final, the two teams met again in the final of 2018, at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, before 78,011 spectators. Croatia had reached their first final after three knockout matches that went to extra time. France had rested more, but N'Golo Kanté, their tireless midfielder, fell ill on the day of the final and played anyway.
Croatia had more of the ball; France had the goals. The first came from a Griezmann free kick that Mario Mandžukić headed into his own net, the first own goal ever scored in a World Cup final. Ivan Perišić equalised, then handled in his own area, and Griezmann scored the penalty given after a video review. In the second half, in pouring rain, Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappé both scored from outside the area. Mbappé, 19, was the youngest to score in a final since Pelé in 1958. Mandžukić then scored at the right end, and France won 4-2, their second title after 1998.
