Bitcoin Pizza Day
On 18 May 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz, a programmer in Jacksonville, Florida, posted an offer on the Bitcoin forum: 10,000 bitcoins for two large pizzas, homemade or ordered from a restaurant, as long as he did not have to order or cook them himself. Bitcoin then had no shops and hardly a price; the offer was a way to find out whether the coins could buy something real.
Four days later a member of the forum known as jercos took it. He had two pizzas delivered to Laszlo, and Laszlo sent him the 10,000 bitcoins. The transaction went into block 57,043, mined on 22 May 2010, where it sits beside the only other transaction of the block, the one that paid the miner.
That day Laszlo reported on the forum that he had traded 10,000 bitcoins for pizza, with photographs. It is often counted as the first purchase of a physical good with bitcoin, and the date is celebrated every year as Bitcoin Pizza Day. At later prices the sum became a fortune, and the story is usually told for that; it is also the moment a new money met an ordinary errand.
