Kipchoge runs a marathon under two hours

At 08:15 on 12 October 2019, Eliud Kipchoge set off from the Reichsbrücke, the bridge over the Danube in Vienna, to run 42.2 kilometres in less than two hours. The course led into the Prater park and then four and a half laps along the Hauptallee, a long avenue lined with trees. The morning was cool, about nine degrees, with barely any wind. Two years earlier, at a similar attempt in Monza, he had missed the mark by 25 seconds.
The run was designed around him. Forty-one pacemakers took turns in formations around him, a car ahead projected a green laser line on the road at the required pace, and drinks were handed to him along the way. He passed 20 kilometres in 56:47, kept his rhythm to the end, and crossed the line in 1:59:40.2, with his wife and children watching him race for the first time. Because of that assistance, the time could never be ratified as a world record; it stands instead as proof that the barrier could be broken. Kipchoge compared it with the first four-minute mile.
