For the first time, the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games did not take place in a stadium. On 26 July 2024, Paris staged it on the Seine: the athletes paraded by boat from the Pont d'Austerlitz to the Trocadéro, about six kilometres downstream, past Notre-Dame, the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower, in front of crowds on the quays and the bridges.
The ceremony opened at 19:30 with the Olympic torch on the river. Greece led the parade; in all, according to franceinfo, 6,800 athletes from 205 delegations sailed on 85 boats. Between them came tableaux on the bridges, the banks and the roofs: Lady Gaga, Aya Nakamura singing with the Garde républicaine, the metal band Gojira, and Zinédine Zidane carrying the flame through the metro. Rain fell on the evening without stopping the show.
Emmanuel Macron declared the Games open at the Trocadéro. Zidane passed the flame to Rafael Nadal, joined on the Seine by Serena Williams, Carl Lewis and Nadia Comăneci, and the last torchbearers, kept secret until then, Marie-José Pérec and Teddy Riner, lit the cauldron together in the Tuileries Garden. Céline Dion closed the evening from the Eiffel Tower with Édith Piaf's “Hymne à l'amour”.
